Where the figures come from

The inheritance tax thresholds used here are the nil-rate band of £325,000 and the residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000, both frozen until 5 April 2031. Source: HM Revenue & Customs, Inheritance Tax thresholds and interest rates; thresholds fixed to the end of the 2030/31 tax year by Budget 2025.

Registration of a lasting power of attorney, and the fee for it, is dealt with by the Office of the Public Guardian. Where there is no power of attorney and someone loses capacity, an application to the Court of Protection for a deputy is the alternative route.

This check gives general information. It is not advice about your circumstances, and it cannot see your existing documents or how your property is actually held. If something in the summary applies to you, speak to one of our solicitors.
